What Is Drug Trafficking?

Drug trafficking is the process of moving controlled substances from their places of manufacture to their distribution points. Drug trafficking charges are based on the amount (by weight) of drugs found to be in your possession.

Drug Trafficking Charges And Penalties In Florida

In Florida, state law requires that drug trafficking charges be taken seriously. Convictions for drug trafficking crimes often require mandatory minimum sentences. These can range from three to seven to 15 years depending on the type of controlled substance found and the amount of drugs discovered.

Examples of drug trafficking charges and their correlating sentences and penalties include:

  • Three-year mandatory minimums are assigned for possession of between 25 and 2,000 pounds of marijuana, 28 to 200 grams of cocaine, and 14 to 28 grams of crystal meth.
  • Mandatory seven-year sentences are assigned for between 2,000 and 10,000 pounds of marijuana, 200 to 400 grams of cocaine, and 28 to 200 grams of crystal meth.
  • Minimum 15-year sentences are delivered for more than 10,000 pounds of marijuana, 400 grams to 150 kilograms of cocaine, and more than 200 grams of crystal meth.

If larger amounts of controlled substances are discovered, some drug trafficking sentences can lead to a mandatory life sentence. For example, a conviction for trafficking charges that include possession of more than 150 kilograms of cocaine will require a mandatory life sentence.

Drug trafficking is common throughout the United States. With so many ways to enter and leave the country, drug law enforcement groups find it challenging to constantly safeguard the border. Much of the drug supply in the United States comes from outside the country. Most commonly, non-U.S. drug traffickers smuggle cocaine and heroin in from Mexico and South America, and Russian, Israeli and Western European groups tend to bring in MDMA and ecstasy. In addition, some of the country’s heroin supply comes from groups in Asia.
