Penalties for First-Time DUI Convictions in Florida

In order to try to deter motorists in the state from drinking and driving, Florida has exacted steep penalties that can be used against people the first time they are convicted of a DUI. Not only will there be criminal penalties carried out by the state, but the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DMV) can also use administrative penalties. All in all, someone convicted of just a first DUI in Florida can suffer severe consequences.

Some of the penalties that can be exacted after a first DUI conviction include:

  • Up to one year license suspension
  • Mandatory FR-44 insurance for 3 years
  • Ignition interlock device (IID) installation
  • Up to $2,000 criminal penalty fine
  • 50 hours of community service
  • Up to one year of probation
  • Maximum jail sentences ranging from 6 months to 1 year
  • 10-day vehicle impoundment

It is important to also consider the societal or professional consequences of being convicted of a DUI. Being unable to drive yourself to and from work could lead to your unemployment. New employers will be less likely to hire you after learning of your tarnished driving record. It could even have dramatic impacts on your family life if you have child custody but cannot see your children upon losing your vehicle.
